A lingam (Sanskrit: लिङ्ग IAST: liṅga, lit. "sign, symbol or mark"), sometimes referred to as linga or Shiva linga. The Shiva Linga or Lingam is a symbol that represents Lord Shiva in Hinduism.
A Shiva Linga consists of three parts which represent the 3 Gods. The lowest part is called Brahma-Pitha (Brahma who is the creator who created the universe); the middle one, the Vishnu-Pitha (Vishnu who is the preserver who preserves the universe) ; the uppermost one, the Shiva-Pitha (Shiva who is the destroyer).
There is a mysterious or indescribable power (or Shakti) in the Linga. It is believed to induce concentration of the mind and help focus one's attention. The Lingam raises a devotee above body-consciousness, and helps him communicate with the Lord. The Shiva Lingam is used in prayer, meditation or healing.
